Back from Ortisei, Italy!

by Idaho on Jan.31, 2010, under Reviews

After a week of fun in the snow (wearing my Linde Werdelin 3-Timer), it is time to get back to work and back to blogging about watches. During my vacation, the invitations for BaselWorld and press releases are flooding my mailbox. So beware of some frequent updates here at Fratellowatches. Furthermore, an Orient review is coming up. Although I never took a serious look at Orient watches before, it seems to be a lot of bang for the buck. More this week!

As you can see above, I shot some pictures of my Linde Werdelin timepiece during the holiday. Although I am not particularly careful with this watch, it seems to be hard to get any scratches on this baby. Just recently, a reader of my blog asked me about the Linde Werdelin and if it was a scratch magnet…  Well, it is not. After owning it for several months now, the scratches on my Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and IWC Ingenieur are far more present (and visible). I don’t think there is even one scratch on the LW. Nice eh?

Back to answering a lot of unread e-mail on my Mac.

Panerai Watches Mare Nostrum Evokes the 1940’s Italian Riviera

by Idaho on Jan.31, 2010, under Reviews

If you’re into “all things Italian”, then you may dream about driving your Ferrari along the Amalfi Coast, sipping a 2003 Pio Cesare l’Altro Chardonnay with your “amante” and wearing a Panerai watch. Believe me, you are not alone, and while your dream of driving a Ferrari may be out of reach, you might still be able to afford to buy the wine. I’m not so sure about the watch. Paneria watches’ recently released “Mare Nostrum” edition timepiece is their tribute to the original edition from the 1940’s, and it is the second time the company has rereleased this popular model. The original 1940’s edition was limited to three watches, so it is hard to find a picture to back this up, but Panerai claims the latest version is true to the original.

The original Mare Nostrum, designed for deck officers in 1943, never made it past the prototype stage because the Officine Panerai had to stop production during the war, so its rerelease is even more notable today. This time, 99 pieces will be made, and each of these 52mm diameter watches will be priced at $36,000. Before you let the price of a Panerai watches stop you, remember that these Italian watches are known for retaining their value over time. Why not recreate the chic elegance of 1940’s Italy?

Review of the Helix Typhoon HX380-04L04S

by Idaho on Jan.30, 2010, under Reviews

Today’s review is a bit unusual in that it’s a watch no one had heard of before at WatchReport. I bought it on a whim from a sale site for $58, and think you just might like it yourself. Say hello to the Helix Typhoon, model HX380-04L04S. It’s an analog-digital quartz with surprisingly good specs.

“Watches Sale” is the Best Way to Find Inexpensive Luxury Watches

by Idaho on Jan.28, 2010, under Reviews

When it comes to luxury watches, the first thing most people think about is the price. But if you Google the words “Watches Sale” you will find more than a few online watch retailers looking to sell you a luxury watch at a discount price. But how can they offer high-end luxury watches for sale at discount prices? Aren’t these the same brands that you would find at top retail establishments at list price?

When it comes to the finding the right “watches sale” online, you need to do a little homework first. One thing I recommend is looking at the watch company’s web site and deciding which model you want. Be specific. Choose the metal finish you like best, decide between quartz and chronograph movements, pick a bracelet or band style, and be prepared to look for exactly what you want at online watch retailers. Be sure to make note of the original sale price, as well as any product codes, so you can match these up to the results you find online.

Finally, if you find the watch you want at a cheaper price, make sure it comes with all the same manufacturer’s warranties that you would otherwise be entitled to. Email the retailer and ask if their watches were used as demo models, and if they will offer a money-back guarantee. Learning the tricks of online shopping will allow you to get the best prices from an online watches sale.

Watches Can Say So Much about a Person

by Idaho on Jan.27, 2010, under Reviews

If you have ever taken the time to study the type of watches people wear, you may soon start to draw conclusions about their lifestyle, their values and their hobbies. After spending several years in the watch industry and as a writer of industry blogs, I have picked up on some interesting trends about watches and the people who wear them.

• Some people take the watch they wear very seriously, and others look at them as a mere fashion accessory. Young women are more likely to own several inexpensive watches than they are to own one luxury watch.
• Teens have gotten away from wearing watches because they can tell the time so easily on their cell phones – which are always within reach.
• Because most men wear so few pieces of jewelry, they often spend a lot more time shopping for the perfect watch than women do.
• Most of the men who purchase diver’s watches have never gone diving.
• Some people cannot wear watches because their body emits a unique electromagnetic field which causes the watch to stop working.
• Other people wear a special “Teslar” watch to protect them from the health effects of low-frequency electromagnetic fields.
• Buying the right luxury watch can make it into a treasured family heirloom for generations to come.

No matter why you wear the watch you love, it can be a great way to express yourself through jewelry.

Tissot T-Touch Expert

by Idaho on Jan.26, 2010, under Reviews

Just one look at the Tissot T-Touch Expert and your heart may skip a beat, but it is even more fascinating once you put it on. This lightweight watch almost has a hollow feeling, even though it looks very solid. That’s because it is made from titanium, of the strongest yet lightest metals on earth.

Trying it on made me wonder why more watchmakers don’t use titanium in their cases and bracelets… it seems like the perfect metal for making an otherwise cumbersome piece of jewelry seem weightless. But before I get too carried away with the feel of this watch, let’s talk about the coolest part of all – the touch screen.

Tissot makes the “Expert” seem like it would fit right in with Apple’s iPhone and iTouch. By incorporating a large LCD screen that encompasses the bottom third of the dial, the wearer is able to view data while still viewing the hands of the watch. Before long, you will become an “expert” at using the chronograph-style buttons on the side of the case to manipulate all the functions of this amazing watch. The center button is used to activate the “touch mode” or the backlight.

What kind of information can you get from your T-Touch Expert? Well, let’s just say you will stay one step ahead of the weatherman. Tissot includes a barometer, temperature gauge in Fahrenheit and Celsius, and even a “meteo” mode for tracking the rise and fall of atmospheric pressure. Who knows, wearing a T-Touch might even turn you into a storm tracker!

Dingemans Mechanische Horloges Jumping Hour

by Idaho on Jan.21, 2010, under Reviews

DMH, or Dingemans Mechanische Horloges (Dingemans mechanical watches) is a brand you probably never heard of before (although you might have seen it here and here). It is a very small Dutch watch manufacturer, with a maximum of 12 timepieces per year.

Fred Dingemans, owner of DMH, mailed me pictures of his latest creation, a DMH Jumping Hour timepiece. As you can see below, an odd looking fellow with those screws in the dial and this water resistant crown-concept you might see for the first time.

I did a small write-up on DMH and their Jumping Hour timepiece for the WatchUseek Blog, the no.1 interactive watch portal lead by Ernie Romers. In the heat of the latest SIHH and GTE news, this might be very refreshing!
