Oris is a Swiss manufacturer of luxury wristwatches which was founded by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian at Hölstein, in 1904. Although Oris made some quart time pieces in the 1980’s, the company is famous for producing only mechanical watches present day. Initially the factory consisted of only 24 workmen, but within a decade of operations they employed more than 300 people in the Hölstein area. Eventually Oris became the largest employer in Hölstein, continually building houses and apartments for their workers.

Oris’ line of mechanical watches can be divided into four categories which follow: Aviation, Culture, Diving, and Motor Sport. In 1996, Oris became the first company to launch a series of jazz watches, branded after famous musicians. Initially starting in partnership with saxophonist Andy Sheppard, the company would go on to create more pieces in conjunction with jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong.

While they have had many great partnerships, Oris might be best known for its professional-grade divers’ watches. The Oris Aquis Depth Gauge was a groundbreaking breaking timepiece because of its extraordinary diving capabilities. With water resistant abilities up to 500 meters deep, the watch has a built in capability that allows water to enter into the piece, which in turn uses a scientific principle to measure the current depth. The principle of the Boyle Mariotte Law, outlines that if a volume of a gas is decreased, pressure should then increase proportionally. The principle works because the watch has a sapphire crystal which is 50 percent thicker than an average one, which in turn has a channel in its side that allows water in for measurements. Since there is no inertia in the system, there is no delay in getting real time accurate depth information.
Surrounding the thick sapphire crystal face is a black DLC stainless case, with a yellow rubber strap. A black dial with luminous hands, index hour markers, and minute markers make up the face of the timepiece. Oris prides itself in the fact that its higher quality watches are accurate to a hundredth of a second. The Oris RS Aquis Mens Automatic Watch is available on Amazon for a cool $2,060.
